What is the natural habitat of a Red Devil Fish/Cichlid(Amphilopus) like?
Is there mud on the floor? Are there dead leaves, wood, and other debris in the water? Is there plankton in the water? Are there lots of plants? What kind of materials exist in the water? And would it be possible to imitate their natural living conditions in a aquarium? Answer as much as you can, I would like to know the important details. Thanks!
Everything Ian said, plus forget plants and don’t worry too much about aquascaping. Red Devils are typical of large South American cichlids in that they will redecorate the inside of the tank to suit themselves. They give a rat’s rear end about the way you want it. If they can move it, they will, and adults are quite strong.
Side note: Under gravel filters are often pointless with large SA cichlids as they require a certain depth of gravel to work. My oscar decided he wanted to move all the gravel away from the base of one of the two lift tubes, so he did. Repeatedly. No matter how many times I covered it up, in less than a day he’d strip it. He now has two large sponge filters with power heads and an exposed glass area where the one lift tube used to be.
